Tutu Style Guide For Little Girls
Tutus aren't just for ballerinas anymore; they are becoming a popular clothing items for little girls of all ages. There are many options when it comes to picking out the perfect tutu for your child. The following are a few design considerations to keep in mind so that you choose the tutu that works best for your little girl.
Adjustable waist options
An adjustable waist ensures the tutu fits snugly yet comfortable. It can also give your child more years of wear, since a long tutu can later be used as a shorter tutu or worn over leggings as they child grows. You have three main adjustable waist options:
-
The elastic waist. This is probably the most common and the easiest to work with. Elastic waists don't provide as much leeway over sizing, though, since elastic can only stretch so much. Elastic can also become over-stretched, which causes it to loose its elasticity. This can make it more difficult to pass the tutu down to another child.
-
Button waist. An elastic strip with buttons on one side and button holes on the other helps make this option more adjustable, without worry of overstretching the elastic. As the child grows, you simply expand the waist size by moving the button.
-
Ribbon waist. These tutus are tied on by a long ribbon. These are usually reserved for tutus for babies or for those that are meant to be worn over leggings. This is because the ribbon tie is not as secure on an active little girl as an elastic or button waist.
Style considerations
The next options to consider after the basic waist type is the style you want your child to wear. The following are a few of the style choices available:
-
Full skirt. These are dense tutu skirts that are long enough so they do not require leggings underneath. They usually are lined, as well, so that the tulle doesn't irritate the legs.
-
Fabric tutus. Instead of stiffer tulle, these are made of strips of softer fabrics or ribbons that dangle down. They are typically worn over leggings.
-
Edged tutus. An edged tutu has either ribbon or satin edging applied to the ends of the tutu. Not only does this create an attractive ripple effect, it also ensures that the stiff edge of the tulle can't irritate little legs.
-
Embellished tutus. These tutus may have glitter or even small rhinestones embellishing the tulle. There are also versions where the rhinestones or sequins are caught between layer of tulle.
